Quick and Easy Tips for a Pleasant Home
We experience our world through a combination of all our senses.
By tuning in to each of them, small measures can be taken to improve the
quality of time we spend in it. People often spend a good amount of time in their
homes, so this is a perfect place to start making a few changes. By
deliberately addressing each of our senses, this will contribute towards an
overall positive experience.
One Small Aspect Can Spoil
the Mood
It’s important that the things we see, hear, smell, feel and
taste are all positive, not just some. Imagine walking in to a warm, tidy house
with a smell of an apple pie in the oven. But that dog next door just won’t
stop barking. It is easy to see how that one aspect can dampen the entire mood.
This article provides the regular householder with quick and easy things they
can do that will make stepping into their home a pleasant and comfortable
experience.
Cleaning Your Bedroom
in Five Minutes
Our visual sense is perhaps the most urgent to address, but
also the easiest from a ‘quick fix’ point of view. Spending 5 minutes in your
bedroom is all you need to create a good visual impression. Make the bed! This
makes all the difference and takes less than 2 minutes. If you don’t have time
to tuck all the sheets in, at least shake out the doona and lay it neatly on
top of the bed. Get any clean clothes left lying around out of sight; into a
basket, drawer or wardrobe, and shut the doors. Dirty clothes go into a laundry
basket. This also takes less than 2 minutes. Finally, pull up the blinds for
the day and let in some light. Done.
Block Out Noise with
High Density Insulation
We often get used to so many sounds, that we tend to tune
out to them. But they are still there. Close the laundry door when the washing
machine is going. Carpet on the stairs eliminates the stamping sound of people
going up and down. Put some soft background music on. Some sounds are bound to
penetrate the home and also the internal walls of the home, even when all the
windows and doors are closed. The solution to this is high density insulation in the walls, but this needs to be installed at the
time of construction or during a renovation.
Thermal Comfort is
Fundamental
Get the temperature right. If you’re too hot or too cold,
you’re not comfortable. A well-insulated house makes it easy to maintain a
comfortable and constant temperature, without the excessive use of heating and
cooling systems. Is there a gap under the front door? Buy a draught stopper.
Keep the Air in Your
House Fresh
Empty the kitchen bin. Don’t let it sit there for days.
Putting in a fresh bin liner (possibly scented) makes the kitchen a whole lot
fresher. Put some fresh flowers on the table for a change. Even in winter, open
up a few windows once in a while to let some fresh air through.
Put Together a Fresh
Fruit Bowl
Don’t forget the good old fruit bowl. Not only does it add
colour and dimension, but it offers you a tasty snack between meals. Keep some
extra fruit in the fridge or pantry and top it up regularly.
