Underfloor Insulation and the Summer Tile Chill Factor

A couple of years ago we decided to get underfloor insulation installed under our house. With a raised and fairly exposed underfloor, and with winter approaching, and barely a rug or carpet in the entire house (the floors are all either tiled or laminate) we knew that we’d be better off with the floor insulated. I’d done some reading up on it before hand, and it made sense to me how it all works. The gist of it is as follows: Flooring material (like the above mentioned tiles, laminate floor boards, and timber too for that matter) are inherently poor insulators. So if it’s freezing outside, you can expect your un-insulated floor to be pretty cold as well, even if you warm up the house. If you carpet your floor, the winter chill will probably be less noticeable, but just stand still for a few minutes and ask yourself, is the floor warm, or is it cold? It will be cold if it’s cold outside, even if the heating’s on in the house. Anyways back to my story. So we Googled for underfloor in

Retro Fit Earthwool Installation Not for the Faint of Heart

If you’ve never been up in a roof-space, you don’t know what you’ve missed out on. While no two roofs are identical, there are a couple of aspects of a roof insulation retro-fit installation job which every experienced installer is keenly aware of. For readers who didn’t know, “retro-fit” installing refers to the installing of insulation in an old or in any case, an existing house – as opposed to installing the insulation while the house is under construction. When new homes are built, there is generally the option to install the Earthwool insulation batts (or other insulation) before the ceiling is lined – this process is usually done from underneath, and installers use long sticks to lift and push the ceiling insulation into place above their heads. However with old houses you don’t have this option, so it’s up the ladder and through the man-hole to do what needs to be done. Apart from the weather on the day (roof spaces can become dangerously hot in summer time, especially in th

Installing Ceiling Insulation: What Does the Job Consist of?

Installing insulation is a challenging job, not because of the immense variety and day to day changes, but rather the lack of them. Despite being a job that takes you all over the city to different construction sites, the monotony sets in as it all blends into the same routine and rhythm. Loading Insulation into Transport Vehicle                   Days begin the same way. Loading insulation into trucks at the crack of dawn in order to ‘beat traffic’. The most effective way of doing this is by using machinery such as a forklift with a special hydraulic attachment. This attachment, sometimes called a ‘grab’ can rotate as well as grab, as the name suggests, enabling the operator to pick up multiple bales of insulation at a time and swivel them around so they are able to be stacked horizontally or vertically onto a truck or ute. Moving Insulation Bales Across Distances Without access to a forklift this part of the job still needs to be done and in order to avoid injuries caused my

Sound Insulation Industry Continuing to Grow On a Global Scale

With a prolonged worldwide focus on energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions it is not surprising that there is a huge market within industries such as building and construction for anything that promotes sustainability and a greener planet. Here the insulation industry has had an important role to play in creating homes that are warmer in winter and cooler in summer, without the excessive use of HVAC systems. Thermal insulation provides a barrier that resists the transfer of heat in cold and hot weather resulting in more comfortable homes, reduced energy consumption and lower energy bills. However, it seems that it is not only a goal of reducing carbon emissions that has been driving the insulation industry and studies suggest that the demand for sound insulation is also growing on a global scale. New independent research predicts that commercial building will lead the growth, followed by residential construction, industry applications and aviation. Unbiased and Informati

How to Remove Old Insulation in Existing Homes

These days it is universally acknowledged that home insulation contributes to increased thermal comfort and reduced energy consumption and consequently carbon emissions. In fact, many people report having earned back the cost of the insulation investment within the first two to three years through reduced energy bills. That is to say, had they not invested in thermal insulation, they would have paid the same amount of money over the next few years anyway through significantly higher energy bills. So, what are the critical aspects of the house that require insulation? What will have the biggest effect on thermal comfort and energy consumption? And is the old insulation bad? Ceiling Insulation an Instant Winner Installing ceiling insulation is by far the most effective way of keeping your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. It is quite possible to save up to 45 percent of the energy consumption that is used by heating and cooling systems by installing insulat

Ongoing Demand for Carpenters in Australia

Contrary to popular belief, carpenters in Australia are more than simply glorified labourers. Despite the scope of work being fairly standardised, especially in modern housing estates where houses can be fairly similar in terms of building style and construction materials – carpenters do still need to possess a wide range of skills to cope with the day to day challenges that inevitably arise during the construction phase of a house, apartment block or commercial site. Fundamental Skills Every Carpenter Must Have A carpenter, like many other trades, needs to possess the knowledge to be able to read and interpret drawings and specifications.   This may involve everything from sourcing the correct materials in addition to installing them in accordance with the building plans. Aside from the usual tasks of framing and lock up, a carpenter may also be involved in other elements during the building phase of a house. These may involve the construction of framework prior to concrete bei
